How to Create a Free Canva Account
- Go to canva.com - Open any web browser and navigate to canva.com.
- Click "Sign up" in the top right - Sign up with Google, Facebook, or your email address. Google is fastest - one click and you're in.
How to Open Your Canva Template Link
After purchasing from Rescue Tails Creative, you'll receive a unique Canva template link. Here's exactly what to do - even if you've never used Canva before.
- Check your email or order confirmation - Look for an email with your template link.
- Click the template link - This opens Canva in your browser with a preview of your template. Chrome or Edge work best on desktop.
- Click "Use template for free" - You'll see a blue button at the top right. Click it. This creates your own personal editable copy.
Editing, Styling & Organizing Text
How to Edit Text
All text is fully editable - pet names, descriptions, contact info, adoption details, and more.
- Double-click any text to edit it - A blinking cursor appears inside the text box.
- Select all and replace - Press Ctrl + A (Windows) or ⌘ + A (Mac) to select all text in the box, then start typing - your new text replaces it
instantly. - Click outside to finish - Click any blank area of the canvas to exit and confirm your edits.
How to Change Fonts
- Click the text box once to select it, or double-click and highlight specific words to change only part of the text.
- Click the font name in the top toolbar. It shows the current font (e.g. Montserrat). Click it to open the font browser.
- Search or browse for a free font. Avoid fonts with a crown 👑 icon - those are Pro only. Great free options: Lato, Raleway, Nunito, Merriweather, Playfair Display, Open Sans, Poppins.
- Click the font to apply it. Changes instantly. Canva previews fonts live before you commit.
How to Change Font Size
- Select the text - Click the text box once, or double-click and highlight specific words.
- Find the font size field in the toolbar. It's a number field next to the font name - showing something like 24 or 36.
- Change the size
Click the number → type a new size → press Enter. Or click the – and + buttons to nudge it one point at a time.
How to Change Font Color
- Double-click the text box and highlight words to recolor. Or press Ctrl/⌘ + A to select all text in the box.
- Click the colored "A" swatch in the toolbar. It's the A with a colored underline in the top toolbar. Click it to open the color picker.
- Pick a color or enter your hex code. At the bottom of the color picker there's a # field. Type your brand's hex code (e.g. #111111) and press Enter.
How to Bold, Italicize & Style Text
- Double-click the text box and highlight words to style. You need to be in text editing mode with the words selected.
- In the top toolbar you'll see B (Bold), I (Italic), U (Underline). Click them or use shortcuts below.

Ctrl/⌘ + U — Underline
How to Adjust Spacing
- Select the text box. Click or double-click the text you want to adjust.
- Click the Spacing option in the toolbar. Look for the spacing icon (lines with arrows) or click the three-dot More menu in the toolbar.
- Adjust Line spacing and Letter spacing
Line spacing: Default ~1.4. Try 1.2–1.6 for readability. Letter spacing: Adding 3–5 to uppercase headings looks polished.
How to Align Text
- Click the text box to select it. Alignment applies to the whole text box - you don't need to highlight individual words.
- Click the alignment buttons in the toolbar
You'll see Left, Center, Right, and Justify icons. Click your preferred option.
How to Resize Text Boxes
- Click the text box once to select it. White handles appear on the edges and corners of the box.
- Drag a handle to resize. Corner handles resize width and height together. Side handles resize just one dimension. Drag outward to expand, inward to shrink.
- Watch for the overflow warning. If text is cut off, Canva shows a small warning icon. Expand the box or reduce the font size to fix it.
How to Duplicate Text
- Click the text box once to select it. Selection handles appear around the box.
- Press Ctrl+D (or ⌘+D on Mac). Or right-click → Duplicate. A copy appears slightly offset from the original.
- Drag to position, then double-click to edit. Move the duplicate where you need it, then double-click to change its text content.
How to Add New Text Boxes
- Click "Text" in the left panel. On the left sidebar, click the Text tab (T icon). A panel shows heading, subheading, and body text options.
- Choose a text style or press T on your keyboard. Click a style to add it, or press T anywhere on the canvas to drop a plain text box instantly.
- Drag into position and type your content. Double-click the new text box to start typing.
Uploading, Replacing & Editing Photos
How to Upload Pet Photos
Canva's Uploads panel stores all your photos in one place. Upload once, use across any design.
- Click "Uploads" in the left sidebar. Click the Uploads tab (cloud/arrow icon) on the left panel.
- Click "Upload files" and choose your photo
Accepted formats: JPG, PNG, HEIC, WebP, GIF. - Wait for the upload to complete. A progress bar shows the upload. Once done, the photo stays in your Uploads panel for all future designs.
- Click or drag it onto the canvas. Click the photo to add it, or drag it directly onto a placeholder frame in your template.
Drag-and-Drop Uploading
The fastest way to get a photo into Canva - skip the upload panel entirely.
- Open your photo in your computer's file browser. Open Finder (Mac) or File Explorer (Windows) and navigate to the photo.
- Drag the file onto the Canva canvas
Click and hold the photo → drag it into your browser window over the Canva design area → release. - Canva uploads and places it automatically
The photo uploads and lands on your canvas. If dragged onto an existing frame, it replaces it instantly.
Replacing Existing Images
METHOD A — REPLACE BUTTON
- Click the placeholder image to select it
A blue border appears around the frame. - Click "Replace" in the top toolbar
Click it to open your upload options. - Choose "Upload from device"
Your photo replaces the placeholder and automatically fits the same frame shape.
METHOD B — DRAG FROM UPLOADS PANEL
- Upload your photo via the Uploads panel
Uploads → Upload files → select your photo. - Drag it directly onto the placeholder image
Wait for the green highlight border to appear around the specific frame - only release when you see it.
